Once upon a time there
was this guy and this girl who knew each other. And she lined him up with all
of her friends but secretly hoped he would ask her out. And then one day, when
he was leaving to go on a trip to the beach, she invited herself along. And he
said okay. And they fell in love and got married. And they had a baby girl and
then another one (that’s me, Lisa), and then 2 more baby boys followed. And
they lived a happy life in a gray house on a tree-lined street with an
irrigation ditch where they would race paper boats.
Once upon another time
there was boy and girl whose parents knew each other and thought they should
meet. The boy dated many girls and almost let this one slip through his
fingers. Luckily, he came to his senses and knew that the girl would make a
great wife. They married and had 2 girls, followed by a boy (that’s Adam), and
then 2 more boys. They were a smart, loud bunch who built huts in the back yard
and biked through open fields on summer days with the sun leaving specks of
freckles on their skin.
The boy named Adam was
rascally and mischievous and moved to lots of different houses when he was
growing up. He loved to take the wheels off his Matchbox cars and played peewee
football with the name “Deadly” on the back of his jersey. The girl named Lisa
was the sort of girl who tried to fit in with everyone, but was usually
marching to the beat of her own drum. She grew up swimming like a fish and
swinging in the hammock, reading from sun up to sun down.
Adam grew up and had a
friend who had a wife who worked with Lisa. They thought Adam and Lisa would
make great friends, maybe more. Their first date lasted until the wee hours of
the morning, and they spent nearly every waking moment together from that point
forward. They said “I love you”(s) and set about planning a beautiful wedding.
They had their reception in a greenhouse (he thought she was crazy when she
suggested it until he saw it…and then he agreed it was the best place to have a
reception. Like ever. It was magical).
And because they loved
each other so much, they decided to have a baby. And not just one, but they
found out we were pregnant with two littles to love. Because they do everything
in their own funny sort of way, this little boy and this little girl that they
were expecting decided to join their crazy family very, very early. 16 weeks
early to be precise, weighing in at just over a pound each. They loved on their
little boy Beck for a whole week before he needed to go home to his Father in
Heaven. And even though it was the wrong everything - due date, year, weight
and length – it turns out that their little Macey was just right.
As Macey started to
grow and get big, they felt the call of parenthood singing to their souls
again. And so they turned to adoption. They waited for many months and then had
a brave and wonderful and courageous expectant mom contact them. She was
pregnant. She was young. She was not married. She wanted more for her baby. She
wanted them. They traveled across the country to Alabama and were in the room
to witness the birth of their son, Finley. Their lives got infinitely better
that day. And now as Finn is starting to grow and get big, they feel the call
of parenthood singing to their souls again.
